Love relationships break. People drift. Feelings cool. Romans 5 sets a totally different standard: when God saves a sinner through Jesus Christ, He brings that person into a spiritual love relationship that lasts through all eternity. We walk through Romans 5:1-11 and keep returning to the anchor phrase, “hope does not disappoint,” because the gospel isn’t built on our stability, but on God’s. Justified by faith, we have peace with God, access into grace, and a real hope that holds even in tribulation.

We also press into what Paul means when he says, “the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.” That love is God’s love for us, proved when Christ died for the ungodly, even while we were still sinners and enemies. Then Paul’s “much more” logic lands with force: if God loved us before we were saved, how much more can we trust His certain deliverance now that we’re reconciled. This is Christian assurance of salvation rooted in the cross, the blood of Christ, and the saving life of the risen Son.

From there we talk about the difference between objective truth and subjective experience. The Holy Spirit doesn’t merely inform the mind; He bears witness in the inner person, producing love for God and new desires for worship, prayer, Scripture, and obedience. Fear loves to talk loud, especially about what might happen tomorrow. The word “access” can sound small until you realize what it meant for real people who lived with walls, courts, priests, and a veil that kept them out. We open Romans 5 and slow down on Romans 5:2, where Paul says we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand. Peace with God can feel elusive when your conscience is loud and your faith feels small. In Romans 5:1, Paul gives us something sturdier than a mood: a courtroom verdict. Because we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, and that peace is a present possession, not a reward we earn after we “do better.”

The most unsettling line in Romans 4 might also be the most hopeful: God justifies the ungodly. That single sentence drags us out of performance mode and into the heart of the gospel, where our confidence rests on what God promises and what Christ has done, not on what we can prove. On this Resurrection Sunday message, we keep walking through From Guilty to Glory in the Book of Romans and ask the honest question many people avoid: how is anyone actually made right with God?

We trace Paul’s argument through Abraham’s story and watch the logic land with force. Abraham is counted righteous by faith, not by works, and that “counting” is courtroom and accounting language: God credits righteousness to an account that did not earn it. “But now” might be the two most hope filled words you’ll ever hear if you’ve felt the weight of guilt, failure, or the sense that you’ll never be “good enough.” We keep moving through Romans in our From Guilty to Glory series, and Romans 3:21-26 brings us straight to the miracle: God can declare profoundly corrupt sinners righteous without pretending our sin is small or bending his own justice. 

We walk line by line through Paul’s argument that righteousness is revealed apart from the law. That means salvation is not a ladder of moral improvement, religious effort, or self rescue. It’s a gift. We also confront a common assumption that some people are nearly righteous and just need a tiny boost of grace, while others need more. Romans levels us all to the same need and then offers the same hope to everyone through faith in Jesus Christ. Boasting gets shut down, not because goodness doesn’t matter in human relationships, but because it cannot purchase redemption. 

Then we slow down over one of the most important words in the passage: propitiation. Using the Old Testament picture of the mercy seat, we see how the shedding of blood turns a place of judgment into a place of reconciliation. God demonstrates his righteousness so he can be both just and the justifier, and we end with the stunning “double transfer” at the heart of the gospel: our sin counted to Christ, and Christ’s righteousness counted to us. Hypocrisy in the church is real, but it’s a terrible measuring stick for the character of God. A single sentence from a child toppled an empire’s shared pretense: “The emperor has no clothes.” We start there because it mirrors what Romans 3 does to the kind of confidence that looks spiritual on the outside but cannot hold up under God’s judgment. Some of the worst tragedies and some of the weirdest moments in history share the same cover story: “We did it for religion.” We start there with a surprising modern example, then let Romans do what it always does best, strip away our excuses and show what’s really going on in the human heart. This message sits in the opening argument of the Book of Romans where Paul explains why people are guilty before God and why every person needs forgiveness, salvation, and the grace of the gospel of Jesus Christ. 

We trace Paul’s three portraits of guilt: the rebellious person who openly rejects God, the respectable person who feels superior because their sins look smaller, and the religious person who trusts religion itself to make them acceptable to God. Romans 2:17-29 hits close to home as we talk about depending on labels and heritage, leaning on rules and regulations, and boasting about a supposed inside track with God. We also connect Jesus’ warning from John 5: you can study the Bible, own the Bible, even brag about the Bible, and still refuse to come to Christ for life.

God’s judgment sounds terrifying until you realize how perfectly fair it is and how deeply it exposes what we actually love. Truth can be right in front of us and still get pushed down. The scariest kind of judgment is the kind you don’t see coming, because life looks fine on the surface. We open Romans 1:18 and ask the question people have asked for centuries: why do the wicked prosper, and why does God seem quiet when evil is loud? Dr. Timothy Mann answers with a sober reminder that God’s wrath can be delayed without being denied, and that a postponed reckoning can still be a righteous reckoning. 

We also dig into what Paul actually means when he says “the wrath of God is revealed from heaven.” That phrase isn’t abstract or poetic. We talk through two ways God reveals wrath: through the moral order of the world, where sin carries built-in consequences, and through God’s direct personal intervention, where the Lord acts according to his will in real history. Along the way, we challenge the idea that God is a distant force and confront the comforting slogan that “God is not angry” when Scripture says otherwise. 

Then the message gets personal. God’s wrath is revealed against all ungodliness and unrighteousness, which means none of us escapes by comparison, tradition, or good deeds. We unpack ungodliness as a failed relationship with God that refuses reverence and true worship, and unrighteousness as the outward life that follows. We also face the hard diagnosis of Romans 1: people suppress the truth by holding tightly to sin, even though God has made knowledge of himself evident within them. 

The closing call is both urgent and hopeful: don’t toy with a holy God, and don’t ignore the mercy offered in Jesus Christ, who takes the penalty of sin and absorbs wrath at the cross. Romans doesn’t start by telling us we’re basically fine and just need a boost. It starts by telling the truth. As we continue From Guilty to Glory, Dr. Timothy Mann slows down over Romans 1:18-19 and tackles a doctrine many people avoid: the wrath of God. Not as a shock tactic, and not as human rage projected onto God, but as the Bible’s description of God’s settled, holy opposition to sin and to the suppression of truth.

We walk through why Paul leads with judgment before he offers the way of escape. If we only talk about the benefits of salvation, we shrink the gospel into sentiment and we blur the moral seriousness of sin. You’ll hear a clear definition of biblical wrath, why God’s holiness cannot tolerate evil, and why “preaching the whole counsel of God” means we do not take a cafeteria approach to Scripture.

We also connect the theme across the Bible, showing that God’s wrath is revealed in both the Old Testament and the New Testament, and that it is continually being revealed and will be revealed fully. Then we land where the message inevitably points: the cross of Jesus Christ, the greatest display of God’s justice against sin and God’s mercy toward sinners.

The gospel sounded laughable in Rome: a message from a conquered people about a crucified Savior, preached to common folks and slaves while philosophers debated truth and legions projected power. Yet Paul writes one of the boldest lines in Scripture, and we slow down to feel its weight: “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth” (Romans 1:16). 

We follow Paul’s mindset as he calls himself a debtor to all people and eager to bring the good news to the very center of the empire. Then we unpack why he is so confident, not in his personality or strategy, but in the gospel itself: its origin in God, its operation as God’s power, and its outcome in real salvation, deliverance from the penalty and power of sin. If you’ve ever felt like you need to clean yourself up, work harder, or “do better” to earn God’s favor, this message keeps returning to the same steady ground: salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ as proclaimed in the gospel, and there is no other way. 

Romans 1:17 takes us even deeper by naming the theme of the whole letter: the righteousness of God revealed in the gospel. We face the big question every honest person eventually asks: How can a holy God forgive guilty sinners and still be holy? The answer points to Christ’s death and resurrection, where God is shown to be both just and the justifier, and where “the just shall live by faith” becomes a lived reality, not a slogan.

Rome wasn’t exactly famous for spiritual softness, so why does Paul sound so confident as he opens his greatest letter? We start a brand new “From Guilty To Glory” series in Romans with Dr. Timothy Mann’s message, “The Gospel That Shook the World,” and we begin where Paul begins: the gospel of God, centered on Jesus Christ, powerful enough to save anyone who believes.

We connect Romans to two historic flashpoints of renewal. Martin Luther’s awakening around Romans 1:17 helps ignite the Protestant Reformation, and John Wesley’s Aldersgate Street testimony shows how the same truth brings assurance and a warmed heart centuries later. That history isn’t trivia, it’s a reminder that Scripture still confronts “mere religion” and leads people to salvation by grace through faith.

Then we slow down in Romans 1:1-17 to see how Paul links himself to Christians he hasn’t met. He introduces himself as a bondservant of Jesus Christ, an apostle commissioned by the risen Lord, and a preacher separated to the good news. We talk about what the gospel is and what it is not, why the Old Testament promises matter, what it means to be “called” and already saints, and how Paul’s gratitude, prayer, and longing model a pastor’s heart. We also face the big question Paul answers head-on: will the gospel work in a city like Rome? Paul’s answer still stands in Romans 1:16-17, and it calls us to live unashamed.
