A command can be good and still feel like bad news when it finally tells the truth about us. That’s the tension we walk straight into as we continue our Guilty to Glory series through Romans, focusing on Romans 7:7-13. Paul asks what many people secretly wonder: is God’s Law the problem? Dead to the law sounds like a dangerous idea until you hear Paul’s point in Romans 7: it’s not a license to sin, it’s the only doorway to real change. Law and grace can feel like a tug of war in the Christian life, and Romans 7 refuses to let us solve it with slogans. One man broke everything, and one Man fixed what we could never repair. Death feels powerful because it touches everything, but Romans 5 says something sharper: death can’t abound. Only life can. One act broke the world, and one act did something even bigger. As we open Romans 5, we follow Paul’s comparison of Adam and Jesus Christ and we slow down long enough to feel the weight of the contrast. Adam’s trespass brings sin, condemnation, and a reign of death that touches every human life. Christ’s obedience brings a free gift that doesn’t merely patch the damage, it overflows with grace and righteousness for all who receive it by faith. 

We spend focused time in Romans 5:15-17, unpacking why the “free gift” is truly free and why Paul insists it is “not like” the offense. We also define the word translated offense or transgression, a vivid picture of trespassing off God’s path, and we connect that to the universal reach of death “in Adam.” Along the way, we highlight the gospel logic that sits at the center of Romans: salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, not earned by merit and not sustained by trying to “skate by” with minimal devotion.

If you’ve ever wondered why God can feel distant right after you sin, you’re not alone and you’re not crazy. Love relationships break. People drift. Feelings cool. Romans 5 sets a totally different standard: when God saves a sinner through Jesus Christ, He brings that person into a spiritual love relationship that lasts through all eternity. We walk through Romans 5:1-11 and keep returning to the anchor phrase, “hope does not disappoint,” because the gospel isn’t built on our stability, but on God’s. Justified by faith, we have peace with God, access into grace, and a real hope that holds even in tribulation.

We also press into what Paul means when he says, “the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.” That love is God’s love for us, proved when Christ died for the ungodly, even while we were still sinners and enemies. Then Paul’s “much more” logic lands with force: if God loved us before we were saved, how much more can we trust His certain deliverance now that we’re reconciled. This is Christian assurance of salvation rooted in the cross, the blood of Christ, and the saving life of the risen Son.

From there we talk about the difference between objective truth and subjective experience. Fear loves to talk loud, especially about what might happen tomorrow. We push back with Romans 5:1–5 and a stubbornly hopeful claim: if God is the one who saves, then the believer’s salvation is secure and the future is not a threat. From peace with God through Jesus Christ to standing in grace right now, we follow Paul’s logic toward the line that changes everything: we “rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” 

We also connect the dots to Romans 8:29–30, where Scripture lays out God’s saving purpose as an unbreakable chain that ends in glorification. That word can sound distant, but it’s intensely personal: God promises to conform his people to the image of his Son, and the Holy Spirit seals that promise as a pledge of our inheritance (Ephesians 1:13–14). The word “access” can sound small until you realize what it meant for real people who lived with walls, courts, priests, and a veil that kept them out. We open Romans 5 and slow down on Romans 5:2, where Paul says we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand. That one verse connects the deepest questions many of us carry: Can God really welcome me? What do I do with guilt that keeps coming back? Is my relationship with God as unstable as my week has been?

We start with the gospel foundation of justification by faith and the objective peace with God that comes through our Lord Jesus Christ. Then we trace the Bible’s story of limited access under the old covenant, the Holy of Holies, and the fear of approaching a holy God. From there we move to the stunning sign at the cross: the temple veil torn from top to bottom, showing that God himself removes the barrier. Hebrews picks up the same invitation, calling believers to draw near with confidence to the throne of grace for mercy and help in time of need.

Finally, we talk about what it means to “stand” in grace, not as a temporary feeling but as a permanent position held by God’s power. We lean on promises like Philippians 1:6, Jude’s assurance that Christ can keep you from stumbling, and the truth that where sin abounds, grace abounds much more. Peace with God can feel elusive when your conscience is loud and your faith feels small. In Romans 5:1, Paul gives us something sturdier than a mood: a courtroom verdict. Because we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, and that peace is a present possession, not a reward we earn after we “do better.”

We talk honestly about one of the most common battles Christians face: doubt about whether salvation is real or whether it can be lost. Dr. Timothy Mann explains why Scripture calls salvation a helmet for the mind, and why the difference between eternal security (objective, grounded in God’s Word) and assurance (subjective, guarded in the heart) matters for everyday life. If salvation must be preserved by works, then grace quietly turns into performance, and hope turns into constant uncertainty.
