Dead to the law sounds like a dangerous idea until you hear Paul’s point in Romans 7: it’s not a license to sin, it’s the only doorway to real change. We open Romans 7:1–6 and follow the marriage illustration that explains a complete shift in spiritual relationship. When we trust Jesus Christ, we’re no longer bound to the law as a condemning master. We’re joined to the risen Christ, and that new union has a purpose: that we should bear fruit to God.
We also slow down at the sharp contrast of Romans 7:5, where Paul describes life “in the flesh.” The flesh is unredeemed humanness, and it shows itself through sinful passions, cravings that are even stirred up by commandments. That tension matters for anyone who has tried to fix their life through rule keeping, image management, or sheer willpower. The law can expose sin, but it cannot create spiritual fruit. Only regeneration and the Holy Spirit can do that.
Romans 7:6 brings the hopeful turn: “but now” we serve in the newness of the Spirit, not the oldness of the letter. We talk honestly about legalism, why it breeds pretending and criticism, and why love for Christ is the only power strong enough to displace love for sin.
