As the town recovers from a destructive tornado, Charlie and his friends discover a thief is on the loose. Valuables are disappearing from church and from school, including the mysterious Key of Montsarak. While the kids piece together who's behind the string of thefts, Commander Talon is on a quest to recover the ancient key before it lands in the wrong hands.
A shape-shifting villain is hiding out in the gang's safe haven, and they're all in the path of a destructive tornado. How will Molly and Charlie calm the chaos? And can anything save Burrito from the clutches of a shape-shifting alien?
In issue 5, Battle with the Bully Brigade, the story follows two characters as they struggle to just be themselves. Finch is literally racing to beat his problems. Sarah is trying to get along and avoid confrontation. Both feel the wrath of the bully brigade. For Charlie's friends, bullying manifests in words, actions, online messages, and finally as a screaming asteroid hurtling toward Earth. If you're looking for a way to talk to kids about bullying, check out this issue.
A sleepy camp has been plagued by the Legend of the Deep Lake Monster for decades. After a series of recent sightings, Jimmy and his friends decide to break all the rules and set out to find the monster's lair. But, the camp's secrets aren't what they seem to be and uncovering them brings danger ashore.
It's action time when a gang of vile space hogs bent on revenge tries to seize control at a youth group lock-in. Can Charlie and his friends keep things from getting out of hand until help arrives? Do youth workers Lars and Manny have enough coffee to make it through the night?
Charlie and his friends are ordinary teens with ordinary problems - they just happen to experience them under extraordinary circumstances. Like when the evil Edgar Greymatter gets out of hand with his science experiments and plots revenge with his massive minions in "Rise of the RumorBots."
The situations Charlie and his friends experience are similar to those that all kids face. Each issue of "The Complicated World of Charlie Valor" provides teachable messages for youth workers to share with the kids they serve. Whether at school, at home, or even in a Christian youth group, situations present themselves, and kids are faced with moral dilemmas that require them to make difficult choices.
The series has a dual purpose. Not only does it present teachable moments for kids, it also serves as a reminder to youth leaders to plan activities that are safe for everyone involved. From a claims perspective, those filed in relation to youth activities rank higher than we'd like. One of the goals for this comic book series is to emphasize planning and preparation, thereby helping youth programs be more effective and safe.
